IUFoST PRESIDENT'S WELCOME ADDRESS 

 


It gives me a wonderful feeling and great pleasure to welcome you all on behalf of the International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFoST) through its Board and the co-hosts Singapore Institute of Food Science and Technology (SIFST), to the 21st IUFoST World Congress 2022 of Food Science and Technology which is being held in Singapore from October 31 to November 3, 2022. It brings in the who’s who in Food Science and Technology & Engineering globally from academia and industries on a single platform as it happens in IUFoST Congresses. The theme of the Congress, Future of Food: Innovation, Sustainability and Health, simply speaks for itself that we all stand together as one group of scientists to change the quality of life for everybody on this planet earth especially at this time of pandemic and postpandemic challenges.

The congress will cover the latest advances in our understanding of food in all its manifestations including food safety, food security, regulations, innovations in food processing, hygienic design, and engineering, frontier areas in food science & technology, novel food products, nutraceuticals and nutrients, markets and consumer preferences and much more of the latest of cutting edge technologies in each sector of Food Science and Technology. This congress is loaded with action-packed programmes and will showcase the global developments in all facets of food science and technology through parallel scientific sessions with eminent speakers globally, all with rich expertise in their respective areas of specialization, and the precongress workshops for students is also in the planning process. I would also like to mention that a number of other events planned by the SIFST who are the organisers along with IUFoST will be taking place during the congress such as the Expo with food industries, multiple awards sessions and competitions as well as a series of social activities to enhance networking opportunities and also new fellows of IAFoST induction ceremony.

It is time that you plan to be in Singapore to meet friends and professionals in the field of Food Science 
and Technology. This will be a good catch up and an opportunity to cross ventilate with all relevant faculties in broad areas and to be enriched through this congress. We must not lose focus too in addressing the basic problems of hunger, poverty, malnutrition, and undernutrition and not forget obesity-related health problems from Paediatrics to Geriatrics.

I welcome each one of you, the members of IUFoST, fellows, and also on behalf of the Organisers SIFST to the large fraternity of Global Food Scientists and Technologists and Engineers and especially the students and early Career Scientists from academia and R and D Institutions and Industries. We look forward to sharing your contribution to Food Science and Food Technology by your active participation in the congress. See you in Singapore!

SIFST PRESIDENT'S WELCOME ADDRESS 

 


Greetings from Singapore – The Garden City. The organising committee of the 21st IUFoST World Congress of Food Science and Technology 2022 and the Singapore Institute of Food Science & Technology (SIFST) would like to warmly welcome everyone to Singapore and to the long-awaited physical World Congress since we last met in Mumbai, India in 2018. The congress has been scheduled to be held from 31 October 2022 to 3 November 2022 at the largest and best convention centre in Singapore – The Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre with the theme Future of Food: Innovation, Sustainability & Health. Singapore and SIFST is very grateful to have this opportunity to host the World Congress since we last hosted the congress in Singapore and the ASEAN region since 1987 – a good 35th Anniversary!

The organising and scientific committee promised to plan and execute an action packed 4-day event that covers the latest advances in food science & technology. We will be diving into all the key aspects, such as food safety, food security, regulations, innovations and advancement in food processing, impact of Industry 4.0, food engineering, digital transformation in food industry, novel food products, markets and consumer research and much more that will impact the growth of the food industry globally and in the region.

We have lined up an exciting programme that will include industry-based workshops, distinguished plenary and keynote speakers, industry led concurrent sessions, applied research presentations and a plethora of networking opportunities. With strong participation from industry and academia partners, this congress promises to be a "Congress with the Industry & Academia for the Practitioners", and we expect to attract more than 1,500 delegates from Singapore, Asia-Pacific and worldwide. This will also be one of the first few physical face-to-face international congress and networking opportunities as we are moving from the COVID-19 pandemic to an endemic stage. We are thankful and honoured to have support from renown international plenary and invited scientific and industry speakers such as Dr Shakuntala Haraksingh Thilsted, Global Lead, Nutrition and Public Health, World Fish, CGIAR, and 2021 World Food Prize Winner to address us at the plenary session during the Opening Ceremony and Professor Joachim von Braun, Chair (Scientific Group), UN Food Systems Summit to present the distinguished lecture at the IAFoST Fellow Induction Session.

We also hope that our delegates will enjoy your stay while attending the World Congress. Through the years, Singapore has earned the reputation as one of the world’s best destinations for business events, including the Top Convention City in Asia (16 consecutive years, ICCA), as well as the Top International Meeting City in Asia in 2016. These awards and accolades are a reflection of the meetings infrastructure in Singapore, which is unparalleled in Asia. Singapore is ranked amongst the safest cities in the world, with one of the lowest crime rates globally, this make Singapore a great destination for meetings and leisure. In addition, Singapore is also a multicultural melting pot comprising of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian communities. Likewise, Singapore also offers myriad gastronomical experiences from different cultures, both local and international, including the World’s cheapest Michelin starred dish.

Welcome to the 21st IUFoST World Congress – Singapore 2022!

The IUFoST World Congress always has been a great event for all stakeholders engaged in food science and technology that includes scientists, academia, industries, professionals and concerned communities in understanding the role of science and technology for providing nutritious, safe, affordable, and sustainable healthy diets.

As the Presiding Officer of the International Academy of Food Science and Technology 2020-2022, together with all of the International Academy Council Members, we would like to welcome you all, especially the Academy Fellows and professionals to the 21st IUFoST World Congress 2022 in Singapore. The chosen theme for the Congress: Future of Food: Innovation, Sustainability and Health is relevant and aligns with what we as scientists and professionals are facing and addressing the challenges particularly in the current covid 19 pandemic, climate change and environmental degradation. This is a very timely opportunity where we as Food Science and Technology Academy and Community bring up the scientific issues and working closely together in finding the most appropriate preparation and solutions for these challenges.

In addition to the scientific programs covered in the Congress that includes food safety, food security, regulations, innovations in food processing, hygienic design, and engineering, frontier areas in food science & technology, novel food products, nutraceuticals and nutrients, markets and consumer preferences, there will also be events for the induction of new Academy Fellows class 2022, a welcome again for the 2020 Fellows Class who have had to wait until Singapore to meet each other, as well as recognition of the early career/young/student scientists.

Celebrations and appreciation for advancement on Food science and technology will also be reflected through a better collaboration and cooperation of the Penta helix approach among academia, government, private sector/industries, civil society and media. IAFoST under the umbrella of IUFoST strongly supports the interactions with other scientific unions such as IUNS in the International Scientific Council and many other relevant disciplines. We are excited to see the implementation of multi, inter, cross and trans-disciplinary approaches that are demonstrated in the Congress program activities and networking.

We are looking forward to seeing you all in Singapore in October 2022.
